JOHN HAS BEEN IN JACKSONVILLE FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS
Forecasting weather, economic and financial trends. Acclaimed not only for his weather forecasting abilities, he has also won back-to-back CNBC / USA Today Investment Challenges back in the 1990′s.
His passion is all of these, but his true calling has always been Meteorology. He considers stock picking as being rather easy, forecasting where a Hurricane will go and how strong it will be and most importantly who/what will be most impacted are much more challenging.
The Challenge keeps him going… Along with working at the greatest Television Station on the planet! Seriously. Consider this, WJXT maybe the only independent television station on the planet that dominates its local television market. Jacksonville is the 47th largest television market and WJXT dominates most news programming and consistently ranks 1 or 2 in most time periods. How is WJXT able to do it? The GREAT people both on and off-air that is what makes WJXT an awesome place to be…
http://www.insmet.cu ( Instituto de Meteorologica de la Republic de Cuba ) is the web site I use to get Cuban radar presentations ( “radares” ). There is a choice of 8 different radar sites. I’ve noted it mentioned a few times by your crew that you didn’t have radar images of IKE over Cuba because Key West’s radar did not extend that far. Can you use the Cuban info or this there some legal problems involved??
john WHY do all weather people stand in the way of st.augustine weather with all the room they have they must block out st.augustine
It’s complicated… High Definition TV stretches the width of the screen, but there are still older TV’s that we have to stand closer to the middle to be seen and that’s when we cover St. Augustine…. JG
HI JOHN, Just wondering if the storms coming our way tonight 2/1/11 will be very severe?? I live in Bradford County Thank you!

YOUR WEATHER AUTHORITY PAGE IS GIVING SOME REALLY WRONG TEMPS
FOR LOCAL PEOPLE. YOU HAD BETTER CHECK IT
John
Is the St. Johns River higher than usual. We have a boat at Fleming Island Marina and it appears the water level is constantly higher than normal. I noticed this right after Fay. Is it my imagination? You know they say the first to go is the “MIND.”
Perry…
I expect the River to rise more as Northeast Winds continue with locally heavy rains possible through Wednesday…

John,
Many years ago I was an Aerographers Mate in the Navy (weather guesser). I think you are the best meteorolgist on TV. Thanks for your accurate forecasts. I am also a helicopter pilot (retired from the JSO) and I always tried to watch your forcasts….I knew I could count on the accuracy.

The other nite as my 3 year old granddaughter Hannah & i were sitting in the backyard watching the moon & the 2 (stars?planets?)ishe looked up at me & said Papo …”John Gaughan said …it is going to rain tomorrow”very cute from a 3 year old & yes it did rain
John,
My business fluctuates with the weather and your forecasts are the most accurate. Last December your prediction for 2008 would be a wet year, as it was. What is your prediction for 2009?
I have one question, maybe two…I live in Middleburg, and I would like to know why Channel 4 never mentions us in the weather or traffic.
))~
We have weather here and we have traffic and accidents too.
I feel like we are being snubbed.
What is up with that? Just curious and wanted to bring it to you attention, so that MAYBE we will get a “Hello there!” or something from ya’ll.
After a hard freeze like we have had. The possiblites of more cold weather and hard freezes before spring?
Can you tell me why it is windy in the daylight hours, and usually calm in the evening and night?
1 more question please.
In the past it has been dry in Florida with lots of wild fires. Would it not be less expensive to seed the clouds [when avaliable] for rain, rather than the hours spent from fire fighters and the loss of property??
Thank you for your time ; Lep
p.s. an e-mail responce would be appreciated. THANKS
Afternoon winds are directly caused by the heating from the Sun!
Cloud seeding is still rather undetermined in its effectiveness…
JG
Hey John, Thanks for all the weather and the way you present it. I just returned from a deployment to Iraq with the Florida Army National Guard aviation unit. It was great to get home to the family and turn on the tv at night and get to see your weather reports again. Thanks, Richard…
Thursday 5/22/09
John,
Is a 5 gallon bucket a good way to measure rain fall? If it is I have had 9 1/2″ since tuesday afternoon about 4pm. I live in the Grove Park/Holiday Hill area of Southside.

Send them to weather4jax@yahoo.com
John, Now that we have all made the “digi-switch,” how do we keep updated during a storm, and power outages? After all, power outages takes out everything, including my wireless network, so JustWeather.com won’t do me any good either. Keeping up with Channel 4, and seeing all of your faces, was the only way I survived some of our bouts with Mother Nature of late. Now my poor little anolog emergency t.v. sits as a paper weight…
Well, you will need to shell out more money… But new digital portable televisions are available…

Before buying, read the reviews carefully…

Mr. Gaughan,
Can you recommend a good online almanac site that would cover northeast Florida? I am interested in the dates on which we may see declining temps. in our area; such as the first freeze etc. I watch your forecast every night and you are the most accurate weatherman in the area. Thanks to you and George for all your years of service and insight. Oh, Richard and Rebecca are great too.
is this channel 12 action news LOL JOHN
LOL!
I love my viewers… They keep me laughing… Channel 12 is your “News Leader”, Channel 47 is “Action News” and of course, Channel 4 is “The Local Station”.

My wife and I are taking a 25th anniversary trip to St. Thomas next week and I am worried about the weather. The report shows showers every day. Will there be any sun or is this just an extended pattern. I have trip insurance and can reschedule. I don’t want to sit in the clouds and rain for 5 days. Can you help me please?
Yes… write me at john@wjxt.com so that I can get more info from you…
JG
Hey Mr. Gaughan i was wondering what that halo thing is around the moon, how its made and why? I have seen it smaller but not that big.
Hi John,
You do a great job with your forecast, in fact my wife and me watch you exclusively. But I have a problem with the way you pronounce my home town. In your blog you show how to pronounce your name (GONE). May I demonstrate how to pronounce New Orleans?
New Or lee ans, not New Orleeens.
This is just a suggestion, not a condemnation, and I will continue to watch your forecast…’cause man, its the best.
If you find yourself in Woodbine stop by and maybe we can enjoy a crawfish boil!
Captain Cajun
Hi John.
While watching your weather report this evening, you mentioned your heatpump problem. It could be a defrost board problem or defrost sensors. Basically, your unit is not defrosting properly. Hope this helps. Maybe you won’t have to write such a big check. These were the typical problems that I encountered during the 18yrs that I worked in the AC field.
Ron
Thanks! I hope so too!
JG
i want to be a meteorologist when i grow up:)
you and richard are my absolute favorite i watch you guys all the time…
John,
what’s up with your right eye.
John just to let you know our high here in the Cabbage Patch or [Hastings] High today was [ 99 ]
Hi John! I live just east of the marsh at Wonderwood and A1A and cannot believe that while everyone else is experiencing these glorious torrential downpours, we hear thunder and remain dry as a funeral drum!!! I grew up here and miss the afternoon rains (like clockwork) that used to be the norm this time of year. Why is it that these rains don’t make it too far over the Intracoastal? I feel so cheated!!!
Me too, very little rain along the Jax Beaches…

John,
I consider you one of the best and knowledgeable people I know and count on your forecasts and predictions when it comes to weather in North Florida.
However, your last episode on 1 June 2011 was, IN MY OPINION, very thought provoking and even though you referenced several “scientific” resources, it still leaves one pondering “what if”.
As many “scientist” agree that there is some kind of “warming” in the current time, there’s just as many that consider this a natural and expected, so to speak cycle of events. Our climate is anything but future speculation.
I guess, in the end, it all amounts to a hill of beans to some, however, this day an age of digital, instant media, more people take what they see on television as etched in stone and because they seen/heard it on TV, it has to be true.
Lastly, and again, in MY opinion, if N4J is going to use our local media to promote such a thought provoking episode, please counter it with a contrasting opinion from like “scientific” rSincerely.

predictable and there’s many, many occasions that even yourself have missed the “forecast” completely for the next day, let alone what “will” happen in any kind of
Well, we did present scientific counter arguments… Including the most likely reason that we’ve seen such dramatic/extreme weather… Natural Variations. For example, tornadoes were probably just as common 40, 60, 80 years ago, but with better radar technology and doubling of the population we are now recording every event. Ergo, today they seem to be everywhere…
