GATE RIVER RUN TIPS… STAY COOL!

March 10, 2009

GOING TO BE A WARM RIVER RUN…

The good news is that since we are on Daylight Savings Time and the Sun won’t be up until 7:38AM.  This means the sun won’t be all that bright until around 9:00AM.

The bad news… It will be warm as temperatures will be 60-65 at 8:30AM, winds will be light, humidity will be high… Ugh!

UPDATE:  I went running this morning about the race time and… It wasn’t too bad…

Here’s my suggested list of things to go through before the race, additionally remember to pick up your race packet / number / chip on Thursday / Friday.   Some of you may have already received it…

RACE WEEK RUNNING…

I run the bridges downtown…  On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Nothing heavy, about 5 miles.  And then, I do nothing on Thursday and Friday.  Just rest.  Everyone is different, but since I am not going for a personal best this year (just want to make it back by 9:58AM) I am going to take it easy.

On FRIDAY, the day before the GRR… I would strongly suggest that you eat NON-GREASY foods…  Maybe non-spicy foods…  And depending on your day of race, morning habits

Additionally, this is what I would do tonight (Friday Night):

  • Set aside all of my running gear
  • Shorts/Shirts/Shoes/Blister-Free Socks/Music/Batteries/GPS watch is CHARGED!
  • Attach my number to my shirt and put my race chip on my shoe/laces…

On Saturday (Race Day)…

  • Wake-up 2 hours before race (6:30AM)
  • Little fod, maybe a banana, but little liquids…
  • For me, absolutely no Orange Juice, or Coffee…  Acid re-flux…  LOL!
  • Go Potty before leaving the house, lines at the the Porta-Potty’s are huge!
  • Leave 90 minutes before the race (7:00AM)
  • Don’t stress over the traffic, parking, if you see someone you know give them a call on your cell, relax…
  • Park and wait in the car, I have snoozed, briefly, I have also taken a short jog to loosen up…
  • 8:00AM gear up, shoes, music… whatever…
  • 8:10AM head over to the start line…

Cannon goes boom!

Start running in place (it takes to get everyone over the start line) and off you go!  HAVE FUN!
