SEVERE WEATHER IS BACK, TORNADO TRACKING…

February 19, 2009

THIS MORNING, DOPPLER RADAR SHOWED A POSSIBLE TORNADO NEAR VALDOSTA, GEORGIA…

Radar images comes in many different varieties, there is the normal radar we see on TV that shows where the rain is and then there are ways for radar to measure raindrop velocities and even better,  which direction the raindrops are moving…

In the picture below using storm (actual thunderstorm) as the reference of how winds are moving, we can see if the winds are moving towards or away from the radar site.

Depicted in Green (winds moving away) and Red (winds moving toward) you can get a feel for how winds are moving.  When the two colors are right next to each other AND if this red/green pattern persists it SOMETIMES can indicate a tornado is forming or has formed where the two colors meet…

GREEN COMET APPROACHES EARTH!!!

February 17, 2009

BUT…  DON’T EXPECT TO SEE IT WHEN YOU STEP OUTSIDE…

Generally, when it comes to astronomical features I am almost always underwhelmed.  This all started when I trudged out into the extreme cold of Winter (+5 F) to search for Comet Kohoutek, suffice to say I am still looking for it…  LOL!

So, I don’t expect to see this, even though I will get up early one of these Morning’s, watch Richard on the Morning Show, grab my binoculars and take a peek into the pre-dawn, yet dark skies.

According to this NASA link, I should look just West of due South, I will be looking for something Green-ish…

Let’s hope so…

BTW, I would like to thank Mike Jones, our Senior Editor here at Channel 4 for the tip!
